High Definition Colour Illumination with Broadband LEDs
Rich, vibrant colours - Red, Green, Blue and White
Electrospell’s Spectrafill broadband LEDs produce the widest colour gamut for high definition colour in illumination applications.
Spectrafill LEDs provide the most colour shades in the red, green and blue regions.
Compared to the 20 – 30 nm wide bandwidth of ordinary LEDs, Spectrafill RGB LEDs produce 60 – 90 nm wide spectra – resulting in wavelength-rich light that can show objects the way they were meant to be seen.
Spectrafill LEDs are available as discrete Red, Green and Blue units in both leaded and surface mount packaging.
A true white Spectrafill LED is also available.
Whatever you are building, if it involves illuminating objects in colour then you can almost always benefit from using full colour LEDs. Spectrafill LEDs from Electrospell are broadband light emitters that emit polychromatic light in the red, green and blue regions. These devices have been designed to have overlapping spectral bands so that three LEDs fill the entire visible spectrum without any wavelength gaps. The approximate coverage is shown below.

Spectrafill RGB LED set is unique in its ability to fill the entire 300 nm visible spectral region with only three LEDs. This simplifies the design of polychromatic or high CRI white lighting systems.
Rich, vibrant, dynamic colours are now possible for fixed illumination as well as for backlights and projectors. Spectrafill-based lighting systems offer the possibility of easily changing the intensity and spectral makeup of light, bringing an extra dimension into play. New products can be designed taking advantage of the wide colour gamut possible with Spectrafill LEDs while at the same time, existing RGB LED systems can be improved by substituting ordinary LEDs with Spectrafill emitters.
Spectrafill LEDs can be used individually or as a set of red, green and blue diodes. Each device has standard ESD and reverse voltage protection ensuring longevity in transport, assembly and application. It is easy to combine any number of LEDs to build multi-chip arrays for higher light output. Electrospell also offers standard solutions for thermal management of its LED products, making it easy to build high power LED systems.
Electrospell Spectrafill LEDs are broadband light emitters that produce full-spectrum light rich in all possible colour shades. Ordinary colour LEDs, on the other hand, emit only a narrow spectrum of light which is unsuitable for high quality colour reproduction. This can be understood by anyone who has struggled to discern colours under a sodium vapour lamp street light. The pure yellow light given by these lamps contains only a narrow portion of the visible yellow spectral region centred at 589.3 nm. Only a single shade of yellow can be perceived with sodium vapour light; all other colours appearing black. Ordinary LEDs do a much better job of rendering colours because of their wider spectral widths (typically 30 nm). But even this falls well short of perfect colour reproduction, as the narrow spectral width leads to the absence of many colour shades. A combination of red, green and blue LEDs provides roughly 3 x 30 nm i.e. 90 nm of spectral coverage which is much less than the 300 nm width of the visible spectrum. Red, green and blue Spectrafill LEDs generate light with about three times the spectral width of ordinary LEDs. Their combined light nicely fills in the entire visible spectrum with tails extending into the infrared and ultraviolet regions. The rich, vibrant light from a set of RGB Spectrafill LEDs outperforms any other solid-state lighting technology in its ability to accurately convey the colours of illuminated objects. While single white LEDs can be used wherever white light is needed, their light qulaity is significantlyinferior to that produced by a combination of red, green and blue LEDs.
Spectrafill LEDs can be used in many different ways such as:
● Fixed white light systems made with Spectrafill LEDs produce extremely high Colour Rendering Index (CRI). Objects under Spectrafill illumination look very closely the same as under broad daylight.
● Colour variable lighting systems constructed with Spectrafill LEDs enable the generation of almost any colour including all possible shades of white light. Users can adjust the tone of white light to their taste by altering the proportion of red, green and blue components.
● Wideband single colour illumination for machine vision applications – Spectrafill’s spectrally rich light is suitable for discerning subtle changes in colour shades; extremely suitable for manual and automatic colour matching applications.
● Other applications include, mood lights, architectural lighting, illumination for indoor plant cultivation, OEM components in projectors and scanners, decorative lighting and high-visibility LED displays.
Spectrafill LEDs are available in both conventional 5 mm diameter (T-1 3/4) epoxy packages and in PLCC SMD packages. High power Spectrafill LEDs are also available. The LEDs can be easily assembled into full-colour RGB modules that can be driven by either analogue or digital (PWM) signals.
